Learning with Aspire

Our friendly women-only centre in Chester-le-Street offers a wide variety of free and low-cost courses to help you learn and develop new skills. We also offer training to other sectors, organisations and groups; we can deliver bespoke programmes to meet all your needs.

Here are just a few examples of what we can offer:

Mindful Colouring
This is an opportunity to take some time out for yourself. Spend the session practicing mindfulness through colouring in beautiful patterns. You will have the opportunity to create a paper quilt using your chosen patterns
9.30am - 11.30am
Seated Exercise and Relaxation
Physical activity is good for us all and it can boost our mood. However, not everyone can or is keen to take part in an aerobic style class. Therefore, Chair Based exercise could be for you. For this course learners will practise seated exercise for the first part of the lesson, followed by a relaxation session using calming breathing and mindfulness techniques. - If you have a health condition it is always recommended that you check with your GP before you start any new exercise routine.

Introduction to Drumming
Fun, loud and high energy!! Have a go at playing a variety of drums within a group to create some music inspired by Brazilian Carnivals.
2.30pm - 4.00pm
Cheap and cheerful Cooking
This is the course for you if you want to have a go at cooking from scratch using the Healthy Plate as a guideline, we will cook together, explore and use fresh herbs and spices as well as sharing our family favourite recipes.
9.30am - 11.30am
Wild Gardening
This autumn we are going to spend some time making bug houses, seed bombs and planning for the springtime planting of herbs flowers fruit and vegetables in and around our Aspire building!
12.30pm - 2.00pm
Traditional Crafts
This is the course for you if you want to have a go at some small crafting projects you will also be able to share your own crafting skills with your class. Together you will work to produce several small items as well as gain and share skills.

Intro to Reflexology
Do you want to improve your understanding of Maths? Using anyway we can think of, during this odd time, together we will unravel the mystery of numbers, working at your own pace and level.

Confident Communication
This is a course where you look at all of the different ways of communicating and the importance of getting your point across without feeling guilty.  This will give you the skills to be able to work out if you are an assertive communicator, an aggressive or a passive communicator. With the support of the tutor, you will explore the positive and negative effects which can help when communicating with friends, family, applying for jobs, in the workplace or at home. You will also look at ways of dealing with stress to help your communication.

Aspire to Change
This opportunity combines a taster programme where you can have a try at various subjects to find out if you enjoy them before committing to a longer course with exploring, setting and measuring smart targets and planning for your own future!
12.30pm - 2.30pm
Indian Head Massage
Massage can aid our well-being and this ancient therapy concentrates on the muscles and bones of the head, neck and shoulders and it is deeply relaxing. Over the weeks you will learn how to perform a full Indian Head Massage, paying particular attention to the contra-indications to the treatment so that you can carry out the massage as safely as possible. You will also look at some of the therapies origins and how it can benefit our health. It is suitable for anyone who has an interest in complementary and holistic therapies.

How to enrol*

Enrol by email only from 9am Monday 27th September 2021 to reserve your place.  Many of our courses are very popular and spaces fill up quite quickly, please reserve your place by sending us an email to enquiries@aspire-northeast.co.uk.

Courses start week commencing Monday 4th October 2021, places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. 
You may need access to a computer or phone.  If you do not have access to the internet but would like to enrol on a course please contact us for options. 

Crèche places are available for children under 5 years of age and must be booked at time of enrolment.
Crèche places for support groups need to be booked in advance.

If you are in receipt of benefits, it is very important that you bring along evidence of this when you enrol.  All courses start week beginning 4th October 2021 - please check the individual course listing for details and enrol in advance to secure your place
