Learning with Aspire

Our friendly women-only centre in Chester-le-Street offers a wide variety of free and low-cost courses to help you learn and develop new skills. We also offer training to other sectors, organisations and groups; we can deliver bespoke programmes to meet all your needs.

Mindfulness and Meditation
Learn how to build a mindful life and begin to understand or develop your knowledge of the key mindful principles. You will be gently guided through many meditations to help you cope with everyday life and modern living. This will aid new self-care routines to support and improve your sense of wellbeing. We will practice some simple tai chi movements, discuss the benefits of crystal therapy and chakras.

Positive Psychology
Positive Psychology has been called the study of happiness, find out what Positive Psychology is and how it can help you in day to day life. Using a mixture of group discussions and practical exercises we look at how the human brain works while exploring your personal strengths and thinking styles. With the support of the course tutor you will gain an understanding of the key Positive Psychology themes and learn skills and exercises to enhance the experience of positive emotions, interactions and events with the ultimate aim of improving your wellbeing.

Craft 
This is the course for you if you want to have a go at some small crafting projects you will also be able to share your own crafting skills with your class. Together you will work to produce several small items as well as gain and share skills.

Confident Communication 
This is a course where you look at all of the different ways of communicating and the importance of getting your point across without feeling guilty. The course will give you the skills to be able to work out if you are an assertive communicator, an aggressive or a passive communicator. With the support of the tutor you will explore the positive and negative effects which can help when communicating with friends, family, applying for jobs, in the workplace or at home. You will also look at ways of dealing with stress to help your communication.

Encouraging Healthy Weight and Healthy Eating 
In this class you will explore how aiming towards a healthy diet and a healthy weight has on your physical and mental health. You will be given the information to enable you to understand how to alter your relationship with food and where in the local community to signpost for help if it becomes a problem for someone you work with or know.

Introduction to Drumming
Fun, loud and high energy!! Have a go at playing a variety of drums within a group to create some music inspired by Brazilian Carnivals.

Move on With Maths
Do you want to improve your understanding of Maths? Using anyway we can think of, during this odd time, together we will unravel the mystery of numbers, working at your own pace and level.

Creative Colouring in 
This is an opportunity to take some time out for yourself. Spend the session practicing mindfulness through colouring in beautiful patterns. You will have the opportunity to create a paper quilt using your chosen patterns

Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is a holistic therapy that uses natural plant extracts that can help promote our health and wellbeing. This course will look at the history behind the therapy, it’s uses and many benefits. We will also research some essential oils, practise some massage techniques and make some aromatherapy products for use at home.

Introduction to Teaching Adults
This basic introduction to teaching adults will give you an opportunity to explore what you could teach and what to expect in the wonderful world of teaching adults. You will learn the importance of group management, lesson planning and evaluating learning.

Sugar craft Flowers
Ever made sugar flowers? Here is your opportunity. Take a look at the demonstration, discuss what you’ve seen with the tutor and then have a go yourself.

New Me
This course could be for you if you want to build up your self confidence, self esteem and strengthen your resilience. You will be supported to identify your individual skills, strengths and qualities (of which you will have many) build on them week by week with the support of your tutor and classmates. You will also look at your time management skills and how to improve them on a daily basis.

Healthy Cooking
This is the course for you if you want to have a go at cooking from scratch using the Healthy Plate as a guideline we will cook together, explore and use fresh herbs and spices as well as sharing our family favourite recipes

Express Yourself Through Art
This course will use the work of established artists to inspire your creativity and spur you on to create your very own piece of art using your own choice of media.

Progression with ICT
This course will help you develop your Microsoft Office skills, by exploring Word processing and spreadsheets. It will also help you develop your internet and email skills and enable you to gain the skills to access Zoom!

Introduction to Massage (Indian Head Massage)
An ancient treatment that involves massaging the neck, shoulders, head and face to help relax tense areas and rebalance energy. You will learn how to carry out some of the treatment safely at home (on family members and yourself) and look at some of the history behind the therapy and its many benefits.

Dance Fit!
This course is inspired by the TV programme Strictly Come Dancing, but here you will use the steps of the tango, waltz and more to dance your way to fitness. This class is for those of you who have a little dance experience.
