Aspire celebrates Neurodiversity Celebration Week!

Neurodiversity Celebration Week is a worldwide initiative that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences. It aims to transform how neurodiverse individuals are perceived and supported!

Each day of Neurodiversity Celebration Week we highlighted on social media an inspirational neurodiverse woman to challenge stereotypes and celebrate differences!

On Day 1 we highlighted Christine McGuinness. Christine is a model, TV personality and prominent advocate for neurodiversity. She was diagnosed with autism and ADHD later in life and has used her platform to raise awareness of how autism presents differently in women, the impact of historical research gaps, and the exhaustion caused by ;masking’ social behaviours.

On Day 2 of Neurodiversity Celebration Week we highlighted Emma Watson. Emma is an actress and activist. She was diagnosed with ADHD as a child following challenges with focus and organisation. Despite these challenges, she has had a successful acting career and serves as a UN Women’s Goodwill Ambassador!

On Day 3 of Neurodiversity Celebration Week we highlighted Simone Biles. Simone is an Olympic U.S. gymnast and was diagnosed with ADHD as a child. Rather than hiding her diagnosis, she advocates for reframing ADHD as a superpower, which has allowed her to hyperfocus in training, precision, and high-stakes competition!

On Day 4 of Neurodiversity Celebration Week we highlighted Susan Boyle. Susan is a singer who gained international fame after winning Britain’s Got Talent. She was diagnosed with Autism in 2012 and has since spoke openly about her diagnosis, increasing awareness and reducing stigma surrounding autism. She emphasises that her condition is simply a part of who she is and does not define or limit her ability to pursue her passion for music!

On Day 5 of Neurodiversity Celebration Week we highlighted Lucy Bronze MBE. Lucy is an England Lioness and Chelsea footballer. She was diagnosed with autism and ADHD in 2021 and describes her neurodiversity as a superpower which has allowed intense focus and obsessive drive for football. She is now a celebrity ambassador for the National Autistic Society, advocating for greater awareness and understanding!

On Day 6 of Neurodiversity Celebration Week we highlighted Billie Eilish. Billie is a successful singer who was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome at age 11. Billie advocates that she does not want her condition to define her, but accepts it as part of her. Her openness about her condition has made her a relatable figure for many in the neurodivergent community!

On Day 7 of Neurodiversity Celebration Week we highlighted Anne Hegarty. Anne is a TV personality best known for her role on The Chase. She was diagnosed with Autism at 45. She views her diagnosis as a tool that helped her understand her own brain and has become an inspiring figure in the neurodiverse community, using her platform to raise awareness and support others! She often attributes her successful quizzing abilities to her neurodivergent traits, including an intense ability to focus on specific topics and a unique way of processing information!

At our Spectrum Group we celebrated Neurodiversity Celebration Week by making rainbow coloured infinity ribbons. The ribbons represent the infinite range of neurological differences and the spectrum of human minds!

We also enjoyed cupcakes and a chat whilst we were making them!

Our Spectrum group takes place every Monday 12.30-2.30pm which is a peer-led support group for neurodiverse Aspire women (diagnosis not necessary) - to register please contact: sisters@aspire-northeast.co.uk

Finally, we ended the week with a Neurodiversity themed Breakfast Club in which we aimed to transform how neurodivergent individuals are perceived and supported by challenging stereotypes and offering each other support! Our Breakfast Club takes place every Friday morning 9.30-11.30am so come along for a warm, healthy breakfast and a chat! We would love to see you there!
